Today we’re announcing the release of the final 6 sneaker concepts. Based on the overwhelming feedback we received in January 2017, we have the original set (L1/M1/H1) which were announced on Indiegogo in 2015, with some tweaks to solve our engineering challenges, and a new set (L2/M2/H2) which we developed in 2016. You can see the full range of products here.
With the massive success of our 2015 Indiegogo campaign, which raised almost $1m, we were able to make some great progress. This included hiring some essential talent missing from our team, setting up an office in NYC & crucially, working on product development.
It was clear to us that $1m was never going to be enough to achieve the vision we had set out when the company was founded in 2015, and that we would need further investment to pursue a vision of this scale. We spent a considerable amount of time during 2016 engaging with potential partners which could both help us conquer the technical challenges & help us fund the next phase of this venture.
With limited resources, one of our fundamental mistakes last year was our poor communication. That’s why we’re opening our new community blog. This is where we’ll share our latest updates & enable you to contribute your ideas.
Although it would seem the footwear itself would be the least challenging, it has actually proven to be the most difficult. Thankfully, we are in communication with a few footwear companies, discussing potential partnerships that we are confident can help us bridge the gap.
After an entire year of working on this project, we have come to better understand the logistical challenges of a project of this magnitude. That being said, we are now better equipped to handle these challenges and fulfill the goals we set a year ago.
Shiftwear was founded in 2015 with a clear mission…
“Empower anyone to be an artist and express themselves with technology.”
Our first step to execute this mission was to create a sneaker that users could interact with using their smartphones, while providing a social experience. Our intent was to let people have their own customized product suited to their personal preferences, without the current limitations which exist in the market.
Although we’ve made a good start on bringing the Shiftwear sneakers to life, we still have a long way to go to realize our vision. Although we originally wanted to build this product here in the USA, it would be hugely challenging at this stage. That’s why we decided our efforts moving forward are best focused on utilizing the manufacturing power only found in Asia. By moving our product development to Asia, we will have access to the best tools & materials we need to advance our prototypes and move us rapidly towards production.
